The town carried no visible name distinction until signs were erected in 2001. It was at that time that Phil's fascination in the origins of the Abanaka people began. This intrigue resulted in a study of the Abanaka history. What he found was the saga of a people and culture that endured severe hardships. Although the treachery that the people faced was remarkable, it was not the hardships that captured Phil’s attention. Instead, it was the HOPE to which the Abenaki Indians held firm regardless of their oppression. It was their resolve to keep the Hope that inspired the artisan, Phil Baxter, to name his company after the Abenaki people.

With HOPE as his resolve, Phil Baxter started his business with two purposes in mind. Foremost, Phil’s desire is to provide HOPE to others through sharing his profits with those who are experiencing hardships. The other purpose is to ensure a legacy. The Abenaki people disappeared without a trace and without a legacy. Abanaka Artisan products can be passed down through the generations.
